Audiences For Leak Jng To Think Spatially

February 28th, 2012

For anyone who has attempted to assemble a child’s bicycle, a piece of furniture, a stereo system, or a ceiling fan (Figure 3.1), the challenge of language is only part of the problem. Instructions control actions. Words have referents, physical objects, and those referents must be correctly identified, aligned, and brought together. Directions such as up and down, front and back, on top of and behind, and left and right become crucial in establishing relations between parts. Parts must be linked into a working whole. Motions involving clockwise versus counterclockwise turns, through versus over versus under, and push versus pull must be distinguished. The coordination among text, schematic diagram, and required actions is critical to success in the assembly process.

Spatial thinking is so deeply embedded in the activities of daily life and thought that it is difficult to disentangle and appreciate its role. We may not even realize its role, but it is fundamental to many taken-for-granted activities, underpinning their successful performance and sometimes accounting for their spectacular failure. Imagine, therefore, a classic middle-class family with two parents and children of various ages. Imagine a typical day in the life of that family. Imagine solving the problems of everyday life.

A phone call in late August to a daughteron a study-abroad program in Europe requires, among other things, working out the right time to call. This requires an understanding of time zones and the use of daylight saving time. A trip to take a son to college involves packing things into boxes and packing boxes into a car trunk and back seat in the most efficient way such that space use is maximized, nothing gets crushed or broken, and things are easy to remove. Getting to the college town and apartment building involves using a web-based search engine to print a route map, and then following written and map directions. The exercise machine that was disassembled and packed has to be reassembled without, unfortunately, the instructions, which have been lost. The now-assembled bunk bed, desk, and shelves have to be fitted into the room without blocking heating vents, electrical outlets, telephone outlets, and the passage to the window, closet, and door in the apartment. A trip to a supermarket to stock up on food for the refrigerator requires getting verbal driving directions from a neighbor, remembering and following them, and finding where things are located in a store that is organized in ways subtly different from the one that the family is used to.

A written grocery list has to be mapped onto the floor plan of the supermarket in an efficient way. To amuse a younger child on the journey home, someone has to help her to put together pieces of a complex jigsaw puzzle. For a younger child’s journey, he can choose a foreign language to learn. For this part, students may investigate how to understanding a foreign language, however, learning a foreign language needs a leaning tools, many students choose Rosetta Stone Japanese and Rosetta Stone Korean to learn Japanese and Korean. The journey home is complicated by the need to make a detour around construction that was not marked on the downloaded route map. It is also complicated by a flat tire: replacing it with the spare requires understanding the instructions on the side of the jack, removing the bolts and the wheel, and then tightening the bolts in the correct direction and sequence.

Black College Tours

February 27th, 2012

Many Americans and foreigners want to attend a historically black college. There are many reasons for this. Students enjoy the prestige of a university founded by an African-American historical figure, intellectual or scholar. The most appealing factors for many students are the university provides diverse academic and cultural programs, faculty, collections, and community that reflect and represent African-Americans’ roles in history, science, culture, and society.

There are some excellent black colleges on the East Coast, many clustered in the Washington D.C. or Virginia area. So, I decided to create a black colleges tour that focuses on these universities. The tour is designed for high school students who are deciding which college to attend. Following is a brief description of each university, highlighting the history of the institution, academic departments that are most distinguished and other facts about the college,

Howard University, Washington D.C.
Howard University was established in 1867. Howard Hall was built in 1869 and is one of the centerpieces of the historical campus. Located in the heart of Downtown Washington D.C., Howard has the sophistication of an urban university. Currently 10,500 students attend Howard University. Howard is known for its Arts and Sciences, Business, and Communications programs.

Hampton University, Hampton, VA
Officially founded as a school for former slaves towards the end of the Civil War under the Emancipation Oak in 1861, Hampton University has evolved from Hampton Normal School, to Hampton Institute to the University it is today. Booker T. Washington is an alumni of Hampton University, and Rosa Parks actually worked there in 1957. Hampton U enrolls approximately 5,500 students and 91% are African American. Many students are enrolled in the Liberal Arts Program, School of Business, School of Science and School of Nursing. Hampton, Virginia is located on the Chesapeake Bay and offers business, technology and industry nearby as well as access to miles of coastline.

Norfolk State University – Norfolk, VA
Another inner city university, “one of the largest predominantly black institutions in the nation” is Norfolk State University. It was founded in 1935. Today, Norfolk State enrolls nearly 7,000 students and offers 30 Undergraduate and 16 Master’s Degrees as well as 3 Doctoral degrees. The University is conveniently situated near Norfolk’s harbor and downtown. The campus has recently been updated in anticipation of the opening of The Tide — Hampton Roads Transit’s newest high-speed rail line — with a station at NSU.

Virginia Union University – Richmond. VA
Founded in 1865 in post Civil War Richmond — which had recently burned — Virginia Union University was established to teach the newly emancipated population. Because the American Baptist Home Mission Society spearheaded this mission in the 19th Century, the School of Theology is especially renowned. Liberal Arts, education, teaching and civic engagement are also emphasized. With only 1,500 students, this university offers individual attention in learning. Famous alumnus include the R&B singer Will Downing and James Atkins, a former NFL player.

Bowie State University – Bowie, MD
This university was also founded in 1865, and is the oldest historically black college/university in Maryland. The college collaborates with NASA and houses one of the world’s 100 most powerful supercomputers as well as a satellite operations control station. The campus is in a rural setting, but still located within easy reach of Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C. There are approximately 5,500 students enrolled. With seven residence halls, undergraduate campus life is stimulating. Bowie State University is a leader in teacher education and accreditation, and also houses a Summer Institute in Computer Applications for undergraduate minority students.

A visit to Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD can also be included with this tour. I have omitted a description here because I reviewed this college tour in another article, “High school Groups Take College Tours of Campuses in Washington D.C. area.”

The Last Word on Worksheets

February 26th, 2012

In 1986, mimeograph machines were (for the most part) replaced by digital copiers in elementary schools. Those of us teachers who experienced using mimeograph machines will forever remember the distinct smell of the still-damp, purple-ink worksheets that we handed out to our students – by the ream full. (If you’re like me, you can remember that smell right now!)

Then along came digital copiers and the purple-ink mimeograph machine disappeared. But the teaching tool that the mimeograph machine spawned – the worksheet – has lived on… and on… and on. For decades – literally decades – teachers have been enamored with worksheets. So what is the bottom line? Are worksheets a serious teaching tool or an over-used form of busy work? The answer, of course, is both.

Students can certainly benefit from practicing new skills and concepts on paper. From letters and numbers to report summary formats, worksheets can provide students with a framework for practice – an avenue for synthesizing new information in their brains. Well designed worksheets can also give students a platform for expressing creative ideas and reaching towards higher levels of thinking.

So what is the concern? There are three big concerns, actually.

Our teacher “caution light” should start blinking if we are using lower-level-thinking worksheets (Example: “Check the box next to the correct answer.”), if we are using too many worksheets or if we are using worksheets as classroom busy work.

Both lower-level-thinking worksheets and too many (even high quality) worksheets can hold students back by not providing stimulus and challenge. Studies have shown for years (just do a Google search!) that children learn best through active involvement and real-life experiences. Virtually every teacher knows that children learn to read by being exposed to books and by being read to, NOT by completing worksheets. The same applies to all areas of learning.

As far as using worksheets for busy work, the verdict is in. It is destructive to classroom learning to assign worksheets to simply keep students occupied. Busy work creates monotony, causes boredom and increases the likelihood of behavior problems. Period.

To know if you are on the right track with worksheets in your classroom, answer (honestly) these simple questions:

- Do my students groan when I hand out a worksheet? (The answer should be no.)

- Are my lesson plans based on worksheets? (The answer should be no.)

- Do I feel anxiety if I don’t have worksheets copied? (The answer should be no.)

- Are students excited about learning in my classroom? (The answer should be yes!)

We have come a long way as teachers since those purple-ink mimeograph machines introduced us to worksheets, so let’s be vigilant! Avoid lower-level-thinking worksheets, do not use too many worksheets (even good ones) and NEVER use worksheets as busy work.

Instead, let’s fill our classrooms with meaningful, thoughtful lessons and activities that peak student interest and promote higher-level learning. And that is a message worth copying and handing out!

THe Redesign Of Gis Educational Software

February 24th, 2012

A redesign of GIS software is a key step if GIS is to succeed as a tool for supporting spatial thinking in the K-12 context. Among the GIS design issues that must be addressed are the following:

Broadening its accessibility to the full range of learners; strengthening the capacity to spatialize nonspatial data; overcoming the visualization weaknesses; providing graded systems of GIS that are age and experience appropriate; redesigning interfaces to be more intuitive and to provide help and guidance; raking the software customizable.

The committee recognizes that many of these design challenges are not specific to the K-12 context and that their solution may not occur with that context in mind. Should this be the case, then someone must take responsibility for adapting the solutions to the particular needs of teachers and students. Teachers and students should not be expected to adapt to a one-size-fits-all GIS that does not reflect their special needs.

In this section, the committee examines how a redesign of GIS to accommodate the needs of the K-12 education community might take place and suggests how it might be managed. The committee identified three mechanisms that led to the development of current versions of GIS software: the academic model, the commercial model, and the collaborative model. The academic model was based on researchers writing their own software. Changes in operating systems and hardware architectures led to the demise of many such systems, but ldrisi is one example that has flourished. It is priced for the academic market and for use by large classes at the college level. Its business model relies on sales as well as grants from agencies to pursue specific goals.

The commercial model, exemplified by companies such as ESRI, Intergraph, and Autodesk, is market driven with abusiness model that reflects the need to balance the costs of software development and support against income from the open market. The educational market plays little or no role in this model. The collaborative model views GIS software development asa collaborative process, underpinned by an open foundation of standards and basic functions. Thus, in the 1980s the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers developed the Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS ) pack. age and fostered a community of users who contributed extensions to the package. In this model, there is no distinction between users and developers. CRASS was built as open software, with no proprietary restrictions on access or use. Despite its success, it was seen as competing unfairly with the commercial market and, therefore, its support was terminated in the early 1990s although a residual community continues to use it.

These three models offer distinct options for the redesign of GIS software for the K-12 context. For the collaborative mechanism to succeed, a community would have to be identified, comprising specialists with sufficient technical skills to share the development of appropriate software, and with sufficient scientific understanding of the needs in the K-12 context. An organi. zation such as the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) might be appropriate to facilitate collaboration, with sufficient funding from an appropriate federal agency. UCGIS has access to technical and intellectual expertise at each of its more than 60 member institutions and has sufficient experience in organizing large, distributed projects.

Learning things is not limited to the scentific area. Instead it also has relations with some other things like speaking a language or using software, including Rosetta Stone English and Rosetta Stone French. If you have a creative mind, you will make all your own differences in the end!

Making School More Enjoyable for Students: The Teacher’s Role

February 20th, 2012

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges for professional teachers and educators is that of making school enjoyable for students in a way that facilitates learning. While there is no foolproof method, there are ways in which a teacher can increase student interest and enjoyment in learning to provide for the best in-class experience.

The first thing that a teacher or educator must do is look at his or her own classroom approach. Rather than relying on a traditional method of lecture, dictation and note taking, the teacher should offer to students various problems that must be solved. This method empowers students by putting learning into their own hands. They are able to discover the material through teacher facilitation rather than being given the material through mindless note taking with the intention of rote memorization.

The material must also be made relevant to students’ lives. That is not to say that teachers must dedicate an entire lesson to Britney Spears or Juanes, but rather get to know their students, and incorporate their interests into lessons that are within the curriculum standards and guidelines. If teachers are able to accomplish this task, they will not only follow the curriculum, but they also will be able to capture your students’ attention, and stimulate effective learning.

Teachers shouldn’t be afraid to change the pace of each activity within a lesson. If a teacher makes the lesson as a whole too high-charged, they will wear out the students, leaving them too overwhelmed to retain anything of substance. With the same concept in mind, teachers should not move at a snails pace when teaching a lesson, so as to avoid the entire class falling asleep due to boredom. Rather, teachers should adjust each activity within a lesson as they see fit, keeping the students on their toes while stimulating effective learning.

It is important to also recognize the differences in students. No student is exactly the same as their peer. Some will learn faster than others, and some will inevitably fall behind. If a teacher is able to recognize limitations of students’ working knowledge and memory, they will be able to adapt their lessons accordingly. This recognition leads to the idea of scaffolding lessons and assignments. While it is recommended to check with the principal and superintendent, and quite possibly waiting until tenure to start scaffolding, it has proven to be an effective method at encouraging learning among all students, and allowing students with limitations to catch up and be successful in the classroom.

Lastly, it is recommended that all teachers keep a diary of successful and not-so-successful lesson plans. If a lesson was a great success, it is important to note what made it a success so that can be continued in the following years. However, if a lesson was an abominable failure, it is also good to remark what was behind its lackluster results so as to avoid making the same mistakes in years to come.
